| Abstract | |
Untreated caries is widely prevalent in Nepal because of the lack of affordable and accessible dental services. For many disadvantaged communities in Nepal, extraction of carious teeth is the only choice. The Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) technique is a good choice for single surface restorations, but has not been proven to be successful for multi-surface or rampant caries. Another appropriate technique to treat caries where cost is a factor or when caries involves more than one surface is the Arrest of Caries Technique (ACT) using silver diamine fluoride or silver fluoride. This proven technique is non-invasive, low cost, simple, gentle and portable. In the Arrest of Caries Technique, a chemical agent, either silver fluoride or silver diamine fluoride is painted onto the caries dentine followed by an application of stannous fluoride. |
